Bari Weiss Appointed as Editor-in-Chief of CBS News

CBS News has officially announced the appointment of Bari Weiss, a well-known conservative writer and founder of The Free Press, as its new Editor-in-Chief. The move comes shortly after the merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, which pledged to bring more “viewpoint diversity” and a fresh editorial direction to CBS.
Weiss, who has built her reputation as a bold and outspoken journalist, is recognized for her strong pro-Israel views and her criticism of what she calls “woke culture” in American media and politics. Her new role is seen by many analysts as a major shift for CBS News, long viewed as part of the traditional liberal mainstream media.
Paramount CEO David Ellison described Weiss as a “visionary journalist and fearless leader” with a passion for open debate and balanced reporting. According to Ellison, her leadership is expected to help CBS connect more deeply with a wider, more diverse audience amid a rapidly changing media landscape.
Before founding The Free Press in 2022, Weiss worked for major publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Jerusalem Post. She gained national attention in 2020 after resigning from The New York Times, citing what she described as a culture of “intellectual intolerance” and “cancel culture” in the newsroom.
Her media outlet, The Free Press, has since grown into an influential independent platform that publishes commentary on politics, culture, and global affairs. Supporters praise it for promoting free speech, while critics accuse it of pushing conservative narratives.
Weiss’s appointment places her at the helm of a network once led by legendary journalists such as Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow, signaling a new era for CBS News — one that may blend traditional reporting with a stronger focus on opinion and editorial freedom.
